The first 4 tracks on this CD were recorded on the 5th July 1945 in Chicago with Tampa Red and Tyrell "Little T" Dixon on drums. The opening track, Maceo's 32-20 (a superlative reworking of "44 Blues") is quite remarkable. His vocal phrasing is at times languorous, almost sexual, whilst the piano accompaniment is ominous and relenting. Maceo is out looking for his woman with his 32-20 in his hand. He means business !
In the swinging "Texas Stomp", Tampa, Maceo and Dixon all banter together encouraging one another to give their best and give their best they do...'come on', they implore on the "Detroit Jump" 'show 'em how to cut a rug'.
In another session with 'Mr.Tampa' and Charles Saunders on drums they recorded "Wintertime Blues", "Won't Be A Fool No More", "Big Road Blues" and the incomparable "Chicago Breakdown". The remaing sessions come from 1947, 1949 and 1950 respectively. The 1949 session had a star studded blues line-up of Tampa Red on guitar, Ransom Knowling on bass, Odie Payne on drums, Maceo's loyal protege Johnny Jones on piano and the big man himself on vocals.

This CD includes a 6 page booklet which provide full track details, musician personnel, original discographical details and historical notes by Gillian George.
