Jazz Gillum Vol 3 1941 - 1946
Bill “Jazz” Gillum – Chicago Blues vocal and harmonica. With Big Bill Broonzy, Amanda Sorter, Horace Malcolm, Roosevelt Sykes, Big Maceo Merriweather and others. Along with Sonny Boy (John Lee) Williamson, Jazz Gillum was one of the first blues harmonica players to take the iconic, small but potent, pocket sized instrument from the country and into the city, adding to the cultivation of what was to become the “Chicago Blues” of the 1950s. The third of four volumes presents 25 more sides by this fine 1930s-style harmonica player. 20 of the selections are from 1941-42 while the final five (from 1945-46) find him playing and singing in an unchanged style. Guitarist, Big Bill Broonzy is on all but the final selection and the pianists are Horace Malcolm, Blind John Davis, Roosevelt Sykes and Big Maceo.
